Toddler Storytime: New Books!

This Toddler Storytime was presented at Bellevue Public Library on November 22, 2017.

Being the day before Thanksgiving we had a very small group with little time to spend at the library, so we did not do the Green Box activities this week.   ~ Mrs. B.

Each Toddler Storytime includes activities that support all or most of the five early literacy practices identified as essential in helping your child develop the skills they need before they can learn to read. The five practices – singing, talking, reading, playing and writing – were developed for Every Child Ready to Read®, an initiative of the Association for Library Services for Children (ALSC) and the Public Library Association (PLA).

Reading:

Groovy Joe: Dance Party Countdown by Eric Litwin, illustrated by Tom Lichtenheld

Thank You, Bees by Toni Yuly

Singing:

Hello, Friends!
(tune: "Goodnight Ladies")

Hello friends.
Hello friends.
Hello friends.
We're glad you came today!

Everybody Say Hello!
(tune: "London Bridge")

Everybody say hello, say hello, say hello,
Everybody say hello, hello Wesley!

(Wesley is my turtle puppet who pops out of my apron pocket whenever we sing this song.  Then he sits quietly on his rock and listens to the stories and sings along with us.  At the end of storytime he says goodbye to the children, gives them high fives, eats pretend food from their hands, blows kisses, and plays hide and seek!)

If You're Happy and You Know It

If you're happy and you know it
Clap your hands!
If you're happy and you know it
Clap your hands!
If you're happy and you know it
Then your face will surely show it.
If you're happy and you know it
Clap your hands!

Additional verses:
If you're happy and you know it...
Wave hello!
Give a hug!
Smile at your friend!

If Your Clothes Have Any Red
(tune: "If You're Happy and You Know It")

If your clothes have any red, any red,
If your clothes have any red, any red,
If your clothes have any red,
Put your finger on your head,
If your clothes have any red, any red.

Additional verses:
If your clothes have any white...then please smile with all your might!
If your clothes have any blue...put your finger on your shoe!
If your clothes have any black...put your finger on your back!
If your clothes have any yellow...smile like a happy fellow!
If your clothes have any green...then please wave so you are seen!
If your clothes have any pink...give me just a little wink!

Goodbye, Friends!
(tune: "Goodnight Ladies")

Goodbye friends.
Goodbye friends.
Goodbye friends.
We're glad you came today!

What's in the Green Box?
(tune: "Sally Wore a Red Dress")

What's in the green box,

The green box, the green box?
What's in the green box
For us to play?

This week our Green Box included the parachute, which we played with right after I read the  stories.  The Green Box also held rocks and dinosaurs...and magnifiers!  Children and adults had plenty of opportunities to look at the items and talk about size, shape, texture, colors, etc.

Papa Bear & Me Storytime is designed to appeal especially to daddies, grandpas and other men in a child's life.  I try to choose stories that have a strong, positive male figure in the story.  While I issue a special invitation for men to accompany their children to this storytime, please know that everyone is welcome to come!

One Little Baby Rocking in a Tree

One little baby rocking in a tree. (adult gently rocks child)
Two little babies splashing in the sea. (adult/child make "splashing" motion)
Three little babies crawling on the floor. (move hands in "walking" motion in front of child)
Four little babies knocking at the door. (make a fist and "knock" in the air)
Five little babies playing hide and seek. (cover eyes with hands)
Don't look!  Don't look!
Until I say...PEEK! (uncover eyes)

When Cows Get Up in the Morning
(a gentle bouncing rhyme)

When cows get up in the morning,
They always say "good day!"

When cows get up in the morning,
They always say "good day!"

"Moo, moo, moo!",
That's how they say "good day!"
"Moo, moo, moo!",
That's how they say "good day!"

Help your child think of other animals and their respective sounds as you continue this rhyme!

Our activity this week was Scarves!
Playing with scarves is a fun way to explore colors and textures as well as play peek-a-boo!
Parents in our program love using the scarves to give their little ones superhero capes, pirate eye patches, skirts, hats, and much more!  They can be stuffed under a shirt for a very silly look (and feel!) or piled up to resemble Autumn leaves!

What's in the Green Box?
(tune: "Sally Wore a Red Dress")

What's in the green box,

The green box, the green box?
What's in the green box
For us to play?

The green box held several activity sheets which supported pre-writing skills, shape recognition, and number and letter identification.  The sheets (and many more) are available from totschooling.net.

I also handed out this fun game for the children to play with an adult:

The idea and design came from planningplaytime.com.
As your child reaches in and pulls out a Skittle, use the card to guide the child's response, such as, (for a purple Skittle) "I am thankful for my Nana!" or (for a yellow Skittle) "I am thankful for the splash pad at the zoo!"
I hope parents will enjoy this exercise in gratitude with their children!
