(This rhyme can be said quite slowly, which makes for a gentle rocking motion.  When we slow down our speech we lengthen some of the words, which helps your child hear syllables as well as the cadence of our language.  When speaking, put the emphasis on the underlined words or parts of words.  Cradle baby in your arms or hold him up with your hands under his underarms.    Gently rock child from side to side in rhythm with your words.  When you say "CUCKOO", gently lift your child into the air.  For older children: have child stand and gently rock from side to side in rhythm with the chant.   Invite your child to raise hands above his/her head and/or jump one time for each "CUCKOO" they hear.  Continue this chant, changing the verse to "two o'clock...CUCKOO!  CUCKOO!, three o'clock...CUCKOO!  CUCKOO!  CUCKOO!, etc.)

Home Activity:
I encourage our storytime families to spend time this week helping your children act out various occupations using just a few props and lots of imagination!  Today's story, "Even Firefighters Hug Their Moms", is a wonderful reminder of the tremendous power of imagination.  While it may make for a bit of a mess or clutter, I encourage you to let your child use a blanket draped over the kitchen table in order to make a bear cave, or haul all his stuffed animals into the (dry!) bathtub to play pirate ship or Noah's Ark.  A mixing spoon and a bowl of dry pasta in a bowl might be all your little one needs to play "chef" or Rachel Ray!

Home Activity:
I encourage our storytime families to spend time this week helping your children explore their neighborhood.  Storytime attendees were given several handouts with suggested family activities, including two scavenger hunts!  Whether you are able to take a leisurely walk or bike ride around the block, or a lazy drive through the neighborhood, there is much to see and hear as children experience the variety of buildings, fauna, flora, and humans that make up their neighborhood!
