SLP 2017: Butterflies Storytime: Community Helpers!

This Butterflies Storytime, for toddlers and preschoolers, was presented at Bellevue Public Library on June 27, 28 & 29, 2017.

Each Butterflies Storytime includes activities that support all or most of the five early literacy practices identified as essential in helping your child develop the skills they need before they can learn to read. The five practices – talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing  – were developed for Every Child Ready to Read®, an initiative of the Association for Library Services for Children (ALSC) and the Public Library Association (PLA).

Stories:
Even Firefighters Hug Their Moms by Christine Kole Maclean, illustrated by Mike Reed

Trashy Town by Andrea Zimmerman and David Clemesha, illustrated by Dan Yaccarino

This story gives readers an opportunity to watch for the word "STOP" that shows up several times during Mr. Gilly's drive around Trashy Town.

Many hands make light work as we help to collect trash by saying,
"Dump it in!
Smash it down!
Drive around the Trashy Town!"

Songs:

Hello, Friends!
(tune: "Goodnight Ladies")

Hello friends.
Hello friends.
Hello friends.
We're glad you came today!

Everybody Say Hello!
(tune: "London Bridge")

Everybody say hello, say hello, say hello,
Everybody say hello, hello Wesley!

(Wesley is my turtle puppet who pops out of my apron pocket whenever we sing this song.  Then he sits quietly on his rock and listens to the stories and sings along with us.  At the end of storytime he says goodbye to the children, gives them high fives, eats pretend food from their hands, blows kisses, and plays hide and seek!)

Hurry, Hurry! Drive the Fire Truck!
(tune: "One Little, Two Little")

Hurry, hurry! Drive the fire truck! (3 times)
Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

Hurry, hurry! Turn the corner! (3 times)
Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

Hurry, hurry! Climb the ladder! (3 times)
Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

Hurry, hurry! Squirt the water! (3 times)
Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

Slowly, slowly, back to the station (3 times)
Now our work is done!

I'm a Firefighter
(tune: "I'm a Little Teapot")

I'm a firefighter on the go.
Here is my helmet,
Here's my water hose.

When I see a fire, hear me SHOUT!
I turn on the water and put the fire out!

Goodbye, Friends!
(tune: "Goodnight Ladies")

Goodbye friends.
Goodbye friends.
Goodbye friends.
We're glad you came today!

Home Activity:
I encourage our storytime families to spend time this week helping your children act out various occupations using just a few props and lots of imagination!  Today's story, "Even Firefighters Hug Their Moms", is a wonderful reminder of the tremendous power of imagination.  While it may make for a bit of a mess or clutter, I encourage you to let your child use a blanket draped over the kitchen table in order to make a bear cave, or haul all his stuffed animals into the (dry!) bathtub to play pirate ship or Noah's Ark.  A mixing spoon and a bowl of dry pasta in a bowl might be all your little one needs to play "chef" or Rachel Ray!
