SLP 2017: Butterflies Storytime: "In My Neighborhood"

This Butterflies Storytime, for toddlers and preschoolers, was presented at Bellevue Public Library on June 20, 21 & 22, 2017.

Each Butterflies Storytime includes activities that support all or most of the five early literacy practices identified as essential in helping your child develop the skills they need before they can learn to read. The five practices – talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing  – were developed for Every Child Ready to Read®, an initiative of the Association for Library Services for Children (ALSC) and the Public Library Association (PLA).

Songs:

Hello, Friends!
(tune: "Goodnight Ladies")

Hello friends.
Hello friends.
Hello friends.
We're glad you came today!

Everybody Say Hello!
(tune: "London Bridge")

Everybody say hello, say hello, say hello,
Everybody say hello, hello Wesley!

(Wesley is my turtle puppet who pops out of my apron pocket whenever we sing this song.  Then he sits quietly on his rock and listens to the stories and sings along with us.  At the end of storytime he says goodbye to the children, gives them high fives, eats pretend food from their hands, blows kisses, and plays hide and seek!)

Old Man Grocer Has a Store

(tune: "Old MacDonald")

Old Man Grocer has a store,
Yes siree, he does!
And in that store he has some carrots,
Yes siree, he does!

With a crunch, crunch here
and a crunch, crunch there.
Here a crunch, there a crunch,
everywhere a crunch, crunch.
Old Man Grocer has a store,
Yes siree, he does!

Additional verses:
...he has some juice...with a glug, glug...
...he has some ice cream...with a lick, lick...
...he has some popcorn...with a pop, pop...

Oh, When I Walk Across the Street
(We did not use this at the Tuesday evening program)
(tune: "Oh, When the Saints Go Marching in")

Oh, when I walk across the street,
Oh, when I walk across the street,
I always cross at the crosswalk,
When I walk across the street.

Oh, when I walk across the street,
Oh, when I walk across the street,
I always STOP!...LOOK!...and LISTEN!,
When I walk across the street.

Oh, when I walk across the street,
Oh, when I walk across the street,
I always take the hand of a grownup,
When I walk across the street.

Goodbye, Friends!
(tune: "Goodnight Ladies")

Goodbye friends.
Goodbye friends.
Goodbye friends.
We're glad you came today!

Home Activity:
I encourage our storytime families to spend time this week helping your children explore their neighborhood.  Storytime attendees were given several handouts with suggested family activities, including two scavenger hunts!  Whether you are able to take a leisurely walk or bike ride around the block, or a lazy drive through the neighborhood, there is much to see and hear as children experience the variety of buildings, fauna, flora, and humans that make up their neighborhood!
