Baby & Me

This Baby & Me Storytime was presented at Bellevue Public Library on Tuesday, February 18 and Thursday, February 20, 2014.

Book:
Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin, Jr., illustrated by Eric Carle

Songs:

My Little Baby
(tune: "Someone's in the Kitchen with Dinah")

My little baby is (child's name),
Cutest little baby I kno-o-o-ow.
My little baby is (child's name)
And I love you so!

Five Little Ducks

Five little ducks went out one day. (hold up five fingers)
Over the hills and far away, (move hands in wave-like fashion for over hills and then hold hand to forehead "to look")
Mother Duck said quack quack quack, quack (move hand like quacking)
But only four little ducks came back.

Four little ducks went out one day (hold up four fingers)
Over the hills and far away,
Mother Duck said quack quack quack, quack.
But only three little ducks came back.

Three little ducks went out one day
Over the hills and far away,
Mother Duck said quack quack quack, quack.
But only two little ducks came back.

Two ducks went out one day
Over the hills and far away,
Mother Duck said quack quack quack, quack.
But only one little duck came back.

One little duck went out one day
Over the hills and far away,
Mother Duck said quack quack quack, quack.
But none of the five little ducks came  back.

Well, sad Mother Duck went out one day,
Over the hills and far away,
Mother Duck said quack quack quack, quack.
And all of the five little ducks came back.

Activities:

Toast in the Toaster

I’m toast in the toaster, (gently bounce)
I’m getting very hot.
Tick, tock, tick, tock, (sway side to side)
Up I pop! (raise baby into the air)

Good Morning, Toes!

Good morning toes! Good morning toes!
And how are you today?
I trust you had a good night’s sleep,
And now you’re ready to play.
(lay baby in front of you and touch each of baby’s body parts. Additional verses can include Good morning knees…tummy…hands…cheeks…)

Our activity this week was Bean Bags!

Library News:
This week we welcomed new friends Trace, Tyson and Brighton!

Next week's Baby and Me Storytimes will be held on Tuesday, February 25 & Thursday, February 27, 2014!

Each Baby & Me Storytime includes activities that support one or more of the five early literacy practices identified as essential in helping your child develop the skills they need before they can learn to read. The five practices – singing, talking, reading, playing and writing –were developed for Every Child Ready to Read®, an initiative of the Association for Library Services for Children (ALSC) and the Public Library Association (PLA).

Baby & Me Storytime

This storytime was presented at Bellevue Public Library on Tuesday, January 14 and Thursday, January 16, 2014.

Book:
Peek-a-Boo! by Roberta Grobel Intrater

Songs:

Where is Baby?
(tune: "Frere Jacques")

Where is (baby's name)?
Where is (baby's name)?
There you are!
There you are!
I'm so glad to see you!
I'm so glad to see you!
Peek-a-boo!
Peek-a-boo!
We use this song to help us get to know each other a little better.  As we go around the circle, each adult introduces him/herself and their little one.  We then sing to the baby, inserting the child's name into the song!

Hickory, Dickory Dock

Hickory Dickory Dock,
The mouse ran up the clock, (walk fingers up child's arm or back)
The clock struck one, (clap once)
The mouse ran down, (run fingers down baby's arm or back)
Hickory Dickory Dock!

...The clock struck two (clap twice)
The mouse said, "Wooo!"...

...The clock struck three (clap 3 times)
The mouse said, Wheee!"...

...The clock struck four (clap 4 times)
The mouse said, "No more!"...

You Are My Sunshine

You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are gray.
You'll never know dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take
My sunshine away.

Rhymes:

Jelly on My Head

Jelly on my head,
Jelly on my toes.
Jelly on my shirt and
Jelly on my toes.

Laughin' and a-lickin'
Havin' me a time,
Jelly on my belly
But I like it fine!

I Have a Little Heart

I have a little heart
And it goes thump, thump, thump.
It keeps right on beating
When I jump, jump, jump.
I get a special feeling
When I look at you.
It makes me want to give you
A kiss or two!

Two Little Hands

Two little hands go clap, clap, clap.
Two little hands lay in my lap.
Two little feet go bump, bump, bump.
Two little feet give one big jump!
Two little hands reach oh, so high.
Two little hands wave bye, bye, bye.

Our activity this week was Bean Bags!
Our little ones - and the adults, too! - get very creative when it comes to play time. There are so many ways to play with bean bags!

We were having so much fun that 2 maintenance workers
came to crash our party!

Our little ones get lots of practice putting things away

at Baby & Me Storytime!

Library News:
This week we welcomed our newest friend Katherine!
We celebrated with Katherine and Rory, both of whom celebrated a birthday in the past couple of weeks.

Our next Baby and Me Storytime will be Tuesday, January 21 and Thursday, January 23, 2014!

Baby & Me Storytime

These Baby & Me Storytimes were presented at Bellevue Public Library on Tuesday, November 19 and Thursday, November 21, 2013.

Book:
My Turn to Learn: Numbers by Natalie Marshall

I love this new series of board books!  The format, size, and layout are great for little hands.  They also seem to be quite sturdy!  Others in this "My Turn to Learn" series are "Colors", "Opposites" and "Shapes".

Songs:

My Little Baby Is
(tune: "Someone's in the Kitchen With Dinah")

My little baby is ____________ (child's name)
Cutest little baby I know-o-o-o.
My little baby is _____________ (child's name)
And I love him/her so!

Clap Your Hands
(tune: "This Old Man")

Clap your hands,
One, two, three!
Play a clapping game with me!
Now your hands have gone away.
Bring them back so we can play!
(last time: “We’ll play this game another day!”)

Activities:

Everybody Knows I Love My Toes
(by Barbara Allyn, copyright SOCAN)

Everybody knows I love my toes.
Everybody knows I love my toes.
I love my noggin', my knees,
my neck and my nose,
And everybody knows I love my toes!

Everybody knows I love my eyes.
Everybody knows I love my eyes.
I love my legs, my lips,
my neck and my nose,
And everybody knows I love my toes!

Everybody knows I love my feet.
Everybody knows I love my feet.
I love my skin, my chin,
my neck and my nose,
And everybody knows I love my toes!

Good Morning, Friends!

Good morning, friends!
Good morning, friends!
And how are you today?
I trust you had a good night's sleep,
And now you're ready to play!

We used this chant for our introductions this week.  After chanting, "Good morning, friends", we went around the circle, repeating the chant for each child, inserting their name in place of the word "friends".

Popcorn!

Pop! Pop! Pop!
(clap in rhythm each time you say "pop")
Pour the corn into the pot.
(rub palms of hands together briskly)
Pop! Pop! Pop!
(clap in rhythm each time you say "pop")
Take and shake it 'til it's hot.
(rub palms of hands together)
Pop! Pop! Pop!
(clap in rhythm each time you say "pop")
Lift the lid. What have you got?
(rub palms of hands together)
Pop... pop... pop...
(clap in rhythm each time you say "pop")
POPCORN!
(raise arms or lift baby gently into the air!)

Our playtime activity this week was Bean Bags!  These are such versatile toys!  The ones we use come in a variety of shapes and colors, with a different upper and lower case letter printed on each one.  They are fun to hold, light weight, easy to throw, and - unless you are raising the next Nolan Ryan - a thrown bean bag will not cause injury!  Some of our Thursday children enjoyed putting bean bags on my feet, then standing back as I kicked it into the air!  Others liked stacking the bean bags and others were content to toss them around or play with the empty bean bag box!

Here are some photos from Tuesday:

(Coming soon!)

And here are some pictures and a video from Thursday's group:

Library News:
A reminder that we will NOT have any morning Storytimes next week, due to the Thanksgiving holiday.  The only remaining events for November are Legos on Saturday, November 23 from 1-2 PM and Papa Bear & Me Storytime on Tuesday, November 26 at 7 PM.

I wish all of you a wonderful Thanksgiving!

And now they're on my...head!

There are endless possibilities when singing this song with your wee one!  For example:

Your fingers can go pat, tickle, rub, clap, wave, tap...
on your baby's feet, back, head, tummy, knees, cheeks...

My Little Baby Is
(tune: "Someone's in the Kitchen With Dinah")

My little baby is ____________ (child's name)

Activities:

Good Morning, Toes!

Good morning, toes!
Good morning, toes!
And how are you today?
I trust you had a good night's sleep,
And now you're ready to play!

This is a great wake-up song to enjoy with your baby as they are first getting diapered and changed in the morning!  Your baby will love the rhyming words and the wonderful beat of this chant.
Enjoy introducing your young one to different body parts, such as knees, hips, ribs, shoulders, chin, etc.

POPCORN!

Pop! Pop! Pop!
Pour the corn into the pot!
Pop! Pop! Pop!
Take and shake it 'till it's hot!
Pop! Pop! Pop!
Lift the lid, what have you got?
Pop! Pop! Popcorn!

Our activity this week was Bean Bags!
We enjoyed holding them, stacking them up and knocking them down, putting them on our head, our tummies and our legs, we listened for the sound they make, and we were told about their colors and shapes!

Every Child Ready to Read® recommends this type of play with your child!  Even though your young one is too little to toss bean bags onto a target or send it sailing across the room, the sensory experience of holds and squeezing the bean bags, listening to the shaking sound they make, and hearing a loved one talk about each bean bag's color and shape are all wonderful ways to interact with your child!

On Thursday we welcomed our new friend, Grayce!  We hope you and Mommy had a fun time and will join us again soon!

Our next Baby and Me Storytime will be on October 1st and 3rd!

Riding in his Chevrolet (hands on steering wheel)
He was long (extend arms to show "long")
And he was thin (arms show "thin")
And he didn't have a chin. (point to chin)

He had no chin,
But what the heck (shrug)
He had lots and lots and lots of neck! (Touch or tickle baby's neck)

We had great attendance again this week!  I love seeing all the beautiful babies and how wonderfully the parents/grandparents/caregivers interact with their little ones!  Thank you for sharing your wee ones with me.
