The Soupremes Seek to Raise Funds for the Children's Department

Have you heard the BIG ANNOUNCEMENT?

Everyone's favorite pop group, The Soupremes, have come out of retirement for a special limited engagement!  Prior to providing the halftime entertainment during this year's Super Bowl, the ladies will be stopping in Bellevue for this weekend's Souper Sunday event!  They will be entering their famous Chicken Enchilada Soup in the competition which will benefit Bellevue's Police and Fire Departments.  Come out to enjoy some delicious soups, chat with friends, neighbors, and City officials, enter your bids in the Silent Auction, vote for your favorite soup (perhaps the Chicken Enchilada Soup???) and get your picture taken with The Supremes!  The ladies have pledged any prize money they receive to the Bellevue Library Foundation for use in purchasing books and other materials for the Children's Department!

Mmmm, Mmmm, Good!

This Toddler Storytime was presented at Bellevue Public Library on October 1, 2014.

Books:
"Hi, Pizza Man!" by Virginia Walter, illustrated by Ponder Goembel

Crunch Munch by Jonathan London, illustrated by Michael Rex

Song:

Everybody Say Hello!
(tune: "London Bridge")

Everybody say hello, say hello, say hello,
Everybody say hello, hello Wesley!

(Wesley is my turtle puppet who pops out of my apron pocket whenever we sing this song.  Then he sits quietly on his rock and listens to the stories and sings along with us.  At the end of storytime he says goodbye to the children, gives them high fives, eats pretend food from their hands, blows kisses, and plays hide and seek!)

Rhymes:

Popcorn!

Pop! Pop! Pop!
(clap in rhythm each time you say "pop")

Pour the corn into the pot.
(rub palms of hands together briskly)
Pop! Pop! Pop!
(clap in rhythm each time you say "pop")
Take and shake it 'til it's hot.
(rub palms of hands together)
Pop! Pop! Pop!
(clap in rhythm each time you say "pop")
Lift the lid. What have you got?
(rub palms of hands together)
Pop... pop... pop...
(clap in rhythm each time you say "pop")
POPCORN!
(raise arms and jump into the air!)

Open, Shut Them!

Open, shut them,
Open, shut them,
Give a little clap, clap, clap!

Open, shut them,
Open, shut them,
Lay them in your lap, lap, lap!

Waving, waving, waving, waving,
High up in the sky, sky, sky.
Wave to me...I'll wave to you.
Now let's all say goodbye, bye, bye.

We always say this rhyme at least twice, increasing the speed with each repetition!

Playtime Activities:

What's in the Green Box?
(tune: "Sally Wore a Red Dress")

What's in the green box,

The green box, the green box?
What's in the green box
For us to play?

Pretend Food play!
Set up a picnic for you and your friends!
             Play Grocery Store!
                  Work in a pizza shop!

Bake and decorate some cookies!

Use the Food Pyramid to learn more about the foods you eat!

Each Toddler Storytime includes activities that support one or more of the five early literacy practices identified as essential in helping your child develop the skills they need before they can learn to read. The five practices – singing, talking, reading, playing and writing –were developed for Every Child Ready to Read®, an initiative of the Association for Library Services for Children (ALSC) and the Public Library Association (PLA).

Storytime Has Ended
(tune: "Did You Ever See a Lassie?")

Storytime has ended, has ended, has ended.
Storytime has ended 'til we meet again.

(Children wave to each other as we continue)
'Til we meet, 'til we meet, 'til we meet, 'til we meet.
Storytime has ended 'til we meet again.

Our Hands Say Hello!
Our hands say hello with a clap, clap, clap.
Our feet say hello with a tap, tap, tap.
Clap, clap, clap,
Tap, tap, tap.
Turn around and take a bow.
Sit right down. It's Storytime now!

Five Red Apples

Five red apples growing on a tree.
(raise hands out to form branches)

There's some for you and some for me!
(point to others, then to self)

When we shake the tree just so,
(shake body)

Five red apples will fall below.
1...2...3...4...5!
(close, then open fist as though dropping each apple)

Each Toddler Storytime includes activities that support one or more of the five early literacy practices identified as essential in helping your child develop the skills they need before they can learn to read. The five practices – singing, talking, reading, playing and writing –were developed for Every Child Ready to Read®, an initiative of the Association for Library Services for Children (ALSC) and the Public Library Association (PLA).

Enrichment
I engaged the children in talking about which they like better: APPLES or BANANAS.  I also encouraged them to show their parents the hand stamp they had chosen, and to tell them which fruit they prefer.  Each child was given the opportunity to pick a piece of fruit to take home, so they needed to decide, again, which fruit they would choose. Every Child Ready to Read® advocates spending lots of time talking with your child.  Giving your child the opportunity to choose between two things is a great exercize in decision-making, and gives you a chance to talk with them about choices.  Your child will benefit from your questions: "You like bananas better?  Is it because monkeys like bananas?... Is it because it comes wrapped in its own peel?... or because it doesn't have any seeds?  Can you think of other fruits that don't have seeds?

Our next Toddler Storytime will be on Thursday, February 14, 2013.  Can you guess what next week's theme will be??!!

Mrs. B's Pre-Sliced Bananas!
I shared bananas with the children at Storytime today.  But these weren't ordinary bananas...these were pre-sliced bananas!  Here is a video from our Storytime:

And now... to learn how I made my pre-sliced bananas:

Enrichment Activity:
Talking with your child is an important and fun activity that will benefit your child as he gets ready to read.  This week, and in the coming weeks, engage your toddler in conversation as you do your grocery shopping. Here are some sample conversation starters:

* At home: ("What are some fruits we can add to our list?  Are there any pickles in the fridge, or do we need to buy more?")
* As you go down the aisles: ("There are the green beans.  Do we need any green beans today?"  Do you see any other vegetables we can buy?")
* At the checkout counter: ("Let's put all the cold items on the counter first.  Can you help me find the cold foods?")
