Toddler Storytime: Cookies!

This Toddler Storytime was presented at Bellevue Public Library on January 24, 2018.

Each Toddler Storytime includes activities that support all or most of the five early literacy practices identified as essential in helping your child develop the skills they need before they can learn to read. The five practices – singing, talking, reading, playing and writing – were developed for Every Child Ready to Read®, an initiative of the Association for Library Services for Children (ALSC) and the Public Library Association (PLA).

The Bakery Shop

Down around the corner

at the bakery shop,
There were ten little cookies
with sprinkles on top.
Along came (child's name), all alone.
She/he bought a cookie and went back home.

Our display board featured frosted cookies made from felt.  Each child was called up by name when it was their turn to buy a cookie and take it back home.

Numbered penguins on laminated cards tell us how many goldfish crackers to place on each one's belly!

Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed

Five little monkeys jumping on the bed.
One fell off and bumped his/her head.
Mama called the doctor and the doctor said,
"No more monkeys jumping on the bed!"

Four little monkeys...
Three little monkeys...
Two little monkeys...
One little monkey...

For this chant, children were chosen in groups of five to act out the rhyme.  As we said the chant, the children held one of our silly inflatable monkeys:

Today we played with stamps and ink pads!  Children used this counting graph to stamp designs representing the numbers 1 through 5.  We also used the stamps to create designs on our coloring tables, which are covered with butcher paper and just waiting for little hands to draw, stamp and create!

Children and adults were invited to enjoy stringing wooden beads and playing with lacing cards.  These can be fun ways to help your child strengthen finger and hand muscles in preparation for beginning to write.
