Toddler Storytime - Bears!

This Toddler Storytime was presented at Bellevue Public Library on January 20, 2016.

Each Toddler Storytime includes activities that support all or most of the five early literacy practices identified as essential in helping your child develop the skills they need before they can learn to read. The five practices – singing, talking, reading, playing and writing – were developed for Every Child Ready to Read®, an initiative of the Association for Library Services for Children (ALSC) and the Public Library Association (PLA).

Bear Counts by Karma Wilson, illustrated by Jane Chapman

Children were invited to bring a stuffed bear with them to storytime today.  Those who arrived empty-handed were invited to "go on a bear hunt" in the Children's area and select one to be their companion during storytime.

We pulled out our bear counters for those who were able to stay for awhile after Storytime today!

Talking:
Parents were encouraged to talk with their children about the sizes and colors of the bears, as well as the patterns that were suggested on the cards.

Playing:

Parachute Play!  We pulled out our parachute and used it to let our bears have a bouncing good time!  At first we put ALL the stuffed friends in the middle of the parachute.  We quickly discovered it was very hard for the bears to be tossed around!

Our Green Box included colored construction paper, facial tissues, and a box of adhesive bandages.  Each paper included the following poem:  

"I've got a cold, my nose can't smell,

My eyes are red, I don't feel well. So I'll 

drink my juice and go to bed until my

nose feels better and so does my head." 

The children and parents were invited to use the tissues and bandages to make whimsical butterflies on their paper.

Have fun with your little one by continuing this rhyme, choosing other parts of her body where a snowflake might land and unexpectedly tickle her!  Snowflakes might land on Baby's neck, toes, ears, back, tummy, knee, etc.

Our Green Box activities included sidewalk chalk and the parachute.

Talking:
As children and adults arrived I invited them to pick up some of the colorful autumn leaves I had scattered on the floor.  I encouraged them to talk about the colors, shapes, and feel of the leaves.  As I read "Leaf Man" by Lois Ehlert, I encouraged the adults to talk with their young ones about the wonderful illustrations they were seeing.  A variety of leaves were used to make images reminiscent of fish, birds, butterflies, cows, gourds, and more!  I love hearing parents and caregivers using rich language with their youngsters. 


Playing:

During Storytime everyone picked up a handful of leaves and used them as we danced to a beautiful piece of music called "The Trees Weep Leaves" by David Huntsinger.

Parachute Play!
The weather was nice enough to take the parachute out onto the library lawn.  We had an impromptu physics lesson which involved figuring out how low we had to hold the parachute so that the brisk autumn breeze didn't take control!
