S.M.A.S.H.!

The first of three S.M.A.S.H. events was held at the library on Tuesday, June 16 from 3:00-4:30 PM.
"So...what is S.M.A.S.H.?"

S.M.A.S.H. stands for:
S.ecret
M.eeting of
A.ll
S.uper
H.eroes!

We required pre-registration for this event so as to limit the group size and make the event more enjoyable for everyone.  This first event drew about 15 children ranging in age from 5 to 11.  Since it was Michelle's first experience with S.M.A.S.H. events, it was probably best that we had a less-than-capacity crowd!  We worked out a few kinks, made some mental notes, and feel ready for the other two events, planned for Thurs., June 25 and Tues., June 30.

A note about the photos and video clips:  Michelle and I have been making a conscious effort to give our teen volunteers more opportunities for building their leadership and decision-making skills.  One job I have handed over to our teens is photographing our events.  It has been fun watching the teens experiment with various shots and angles, and it has freed me up to concentrate on other aspects of the programs.  One interesting thing I have noted (this coming from someone who actually used a Polaroid camera and ones that used rolls of film!): Our teen volunteers LOVE to take photos! Following a recent library program, after the teen returned my camera, I started uploading the photos to my computer.  The teen had taken over 170 photos!  Of ONE event!  I have been a little overwhelmed trying to sort through all the images, so they may not be in any logical order.  But, you get the idea!

A note about the Flash Dash Obstacle Course:  Since we offered S.M.A.S.H. on 3 days, we had a slightly different team of Junior Friends to help with each event.  You may notice some differences in the obstacle course on the video clips.  Each team put their own spin on the course, adding some different features depending on the creative minds that were working that day!

Each Baby & Me Storytime includes activities that support one or more of the five early literacy practices identified as essential in helping your child develop the skills they need before they can learn to read. The five practices – singing, talking, reading, playing and writing –were developed for Every Child Ready to Read®, an initiative of the Association for Library Services for Children (ALSC) and the Public Library Association (PLA).
