"I Dig Dinosaurs"

Presented at Bellevue Public Library on July 10 & 11, 2013.

Books:

How to Raise a Dinosaur by Natasha Wing, illustrated by Pablo Bernasconi

Thesaurus Rex by Laya Steinberg, illustrated by Debbie Harter
(This is a great book for reminding us how important it is to expose our little ones to a rich, extensive vocabulary! Challenge yourself to find other descriptive words when talking with your young one about things that are "big", "little", "soft", etc.  Have fun introducing your child to the wonderful world of words!)

All Aboard the Dinotrain by Deb Lund, illustrated by Howard Fine

Songs:

We Dig Books!

(tune: "Three Blind Mice")

We dig books!
Books!  Books! Books!

We're hooked on books!
Books!  Books!  Books!

Whenever we have some time to spare,
We curl up in a comfy chair,
And read about people from here to there.

In books, books, books!
Books!  Books!  Books!

The Dino Pokey

(tune: "The Hokey Pokey")

You put your claws in,
You put your claws out.
You put your claws in
And you shake them all about.
You do the Dino Pokey and
You turn yourself about.
That's what it's all about!

Additional verses:
You put your feet in...stomp them all about...
You put your teeth in...chomp them all about...
You put your tail in...wag it all about...

Activities:

Dinosaur, Dinosaur, Turn Around
(adapted by Kapila S. Love)

Dinosaur, dinosaur, turn around,
Dinosaur, dinosaur, stomp the ground.
Dinosaur, dinosaur, show your claws,
Dinosaur, dinosaur, snap your jaws.
Dinosaur, dinosaur, turn around.
Dinosaur, dinosaur, sit right down!

Open, Shut Them
(a goodbye chant)

Open, shut them,
(open hands, then close into fists)
Open, shut them,
Give a little clap, clap, clap.
(clap 3 times)

Open, shut them,
(open hands, then close into fists)
Open, shut them,
Lay them in your lap, lap, lap.
(pat your legs three times)

Waving, waving, waving, waving,
High up in the sky, sky, sky.

Wave to me, I'll wave to you,
Now let's all say "Goodbye, bye, bye!"

Start out s-l-o-w-l-y, then increase the speed on the second time through.  Can you go even faster when you say it for the third time?!

Fontenelle Nature Center Presents: Underground Animals!

Presented at Bellevue Public Library on Monday, July 1, 2013.

Deborah Woracek visited the library today to present a program on interesting creatures who live or dig underground.  She began her program by reading several stories:

Log Hotel by Anne Schreiber, illustrated by Debbie Pinkney

A Salamander's Life by John Himmelman

Salamander Rain by Kristin Joy Pratt-Serafini

Then Deborah asked the children to form a large circle.  They started out in a nice big circle which became increasingly smaller as the children strained forward to see the critters she brought with her!

We got an up-close look at a nightcrawler. Children were given the opportunity to touch it if they chose.

Deborah also brought along a Barred Salamander.

With instruction and encouragement from Deborah, the children got ready to greet the salamander by putting on their best "salamander face".  The results were very amusing!

The children learned some interesting facts about salamanders and got a chance to touch it.  They were asked to use two fingers to gently touch the salamander, and only after having their fingers sprayed with specially treated water.  This water was used in order to prevent the salamander's skin from being damaged by substances found in regular drinking water, such as fluoride, which can be harmful to the salamander.

Ms. Woracek will return to the library next Monday, July 8 at 3 PM for a fun presentation on Digging for Dinosaurs!

Again next week, we will draw the name of one lucky attendee to receive a free Family Day Pass for Fontenelle Nature Center!  Our thanks to our friends at FNA for providing the door prizes for these two programs!

Legos and Trucks and Bears, Oh My!

We have just completed our busiest week of programming for the Bellevue Public Library's Summer Reading Program, "Dig Into Reading!"

My June 27th posts will give you an idea of the fun we had at our Dine with the Diggers Storytime and Touch-a-Truck event.

On Friday afternoon we held our Stuffed Animal Sleepover and today we hosted over 100 people at our Lego Extravaganza!  Miss Tammy did an AMAZING job of turning her Lego Extravaganza vision into a wonderfully engaging, creative event.  Rather than repeat much of the same information, I encourage you to visit Tammy's blog to read about, and see photos from these two events!
