Presented at Bellevue Public Library on June 5 & 6, 2013.

Books:

Hogwash by Karma Wilson, illustrated by Jim McMullan

Stuck in the Mud by Jane Clarke, illustrated by Garry Parsons

I'm Dirty by Kate & Jim McMullan

Songs:

We Dig Books!
(tune: "Three Blind Mice")

We dig books!
Books!  Books! Books!

We're hooked on books!
Books!  Books!  Books!

Whenever we have some time to spare,
We curl up in a comfy chair,
And read about people from here to there.

In books, books, books!
Books!  Books!  Books!

Ten Little Bubbles
(Tune: "Michael Finnegan")

One little, two little, three little bubbles,
(blow bubbles)
Four little, five little, six little bubbles,
(blow bubbles)
Seven little, eight little, nine little bubbles,
(blow bubbles)
Ten little bubbles go pop, pop, pop!
(clap on each "pop")

Pop, pop, pop those bubbles!
(pop bubbles by clapping on them)
Pop, pop, pop those bubbles!
Pop, pop, pop those bubbles!
Ten little bubbles go pop, pop, pop!
(clap on each "pop")
Having fun popping bubbles!

Activities:

Five Little Piggies

Five little piggies, rolling in the mud.
Squishy, squashy, squishy, squashy,
Rolling in the mud.
Along came the farmer,
and took one to the tub,
And that left four piggies rolling in the mud.

To roll in the mud: make hands into fists and
“roll” arms around each other. Preschoolers
may enjoy the challenge of rolling only their
pointer fingers over one another. “Squishy
squashy” can be enacted by stomping feet
(sitting or standing), and/or motioning
hands up and down, with fingers stretched
out. Motion someone walking for “along
came the farmer.” Motion heaving a little
piggy over your shoulder. Count the number
of piggies on your fingers. Try speeding up
the rhyme as you repeat it!

Open, Shut Them
(a goodbye chant)

Open, shut them,
(open hands, then close into fists)
Open, shut them,
Give a little clap, clap, clap.
(clap 3 times)

Open, shut them,
(open hands, then close into fists)
Open, shut them,
Lay them in your lap, lap, lap.
(pat your legs three times)

Waving, waving, waving, waving,
High up in the sky, sky, sky.

Wave to me, I'll wave to you,
Now let's all say "Goodbye, bye, bye!"

Start out s-l-o-w-l-y, then increase the speed on the second time through.  Can you go even faster when you say it for the third time?!

Library News:

Our next Reading ROCKS! Storytime will be held on June 12 & 13, 2013.  Our theme will be "I Dig Gardening!"

Each Reading ROCKS! Storytime includes activities that support one or more of the five early literacy practices identified as essential in helping your child develop the skills they need before they can learn to read. The five practices – singing, talking, reading, playing and writing –were developed for Every Child Ready to Read®, an initiative of the Association for Library Services for Children (ALSC) and the Public Library Association (PLA).
