Oceans!

Presented to Miss Jenny's Head Start class at Golden Hills Elementary School on Monday, March 18, 2013.

Books:
Way Down Deep in the Deep Blue Sea by Jan Peck, illustrated by Valeria Petrone

The Ocean Is... by Kathleen W. Kranking, photographs by Norbert Wu

Activity:

Fishy, Fishy, Fishy

Fishy, fishy, fishy (put palms together and swish back and forth)
Swishy, swishy, swishy (hands on hips, sway back and forth)
Flip-flop, flip-flop (slap hands together horizontally, then turn hands over and slap again)
Down, Ker-plop! (squat or sit down on the floor)

Now...can you do it again, even faster?  And even faster still?!

Song:

The Shark in the Sea
(tune of "The Wheels on the Bus")

The shark in the sea goes chomp, chomp, chomp,
Chomp, chomp, chomp, chomp, chomp, chomp,
The shark in the sea goes chomp, chomp, chomp,

All through the sea!

The seahorse in the sea rocks back and forth...
The clam in the sea goes open and shut...
The fish in the sea goes swim, swim, swim...
The lobster in the sea goes pinch, pinch, pinch...

Each of my Storytimes include activities that support one or more of the five early literacy practices identified as essential in helping your child develop the skills they need before they can learn to read. The five practices – singing, talking, reading, playing and writing –were developed for Every Child Ready to Read®, an initiative of the Association for Library Services for Children (ALSC) and the Public Library Association (PLA).

It was a pleasure visiting the wonderful students and teachers at Head Start today! I hope you enjoyed my Ocean stories!  Wesley and I look forward to visiting again next month, on Monday, April 29, 2013!
